DIY House Building – Cut Costs and Save Money by Finishing Your Own Floors

Now that you have built your exterior house using DIY house building methods and have plywood flooring, a blank canvas, you can finish the surface inexpensively by doing it yourself! Now this method is really easy and best of all easy on your pocketbook…

1. Filling in Seams and Blemishes – You have a plywood floor now. And as you look at the plywood you might notice some blemishes from deep wood grains and seams from fitting together the plywood sheets. First starting at the back of the room, begin filling in these areas by using wood cocking. And if you have used cocking before, you know it comes out in a circular like fashion like toothpaste does so you have to smooth it out a bit. Just Make sure you use a very thin coat of cocking and use the end of a thick piece of cardboard or a flat end piece of wood to smooth out the cocking as close to the surface as possible. But do leave a thin layer trying to blend into the floor and filling in the cracks. Work from one end of the room all the way to the entrance of the room. If you start working in the middle or near the doorway, then you will end up having to walk across your hard work!

2. Sanding – Let this dry overnight. The next day, take your sander and a piece of your roughest sand paper and sand all of your cocking to make a nice smooth finish. And don’t forget to sweep and mop the entire floor after sanding making sure to clean every piece of dirt, dust from the cocking and debris.
